The katana gets its strength from the many separate and symbiotic processes that the sword smiths of the era employed. While many fine books on sword appreciation exist, these deal primarily with older blades or problems of appraisal. When I was in Japan a couple of years ago I met Katsuo Kato and his son Masafumi Kato, the 25th and 26th generation Kanefusa Fujiwara sword makers.
